Can't believe another great has died, what is it with celebrities and death this year? It's awful.

“British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead after taking his own life. The 40-year-old committed suicide just days after the death of his mother, Joyce. His death also comes just three years after his close friend, Isabella Blow – who plucked him from obscurity and helped him become a star – killed herself.” (DailyMail)

Alexander McQueen was an amazing british designer and will be sadly missed by the whole industry.

My friends band Miller and Nodwell have been in the process of gigging around the south of England, mainly London, Tonbridge and East Grinstead. We've all been loyal friends and followed them around like little puppy dogs supporting them and clapping at all the right places!

Tom Ford - A Single Man - I Certainly Hope So.

Tom Ford is many things - designer, entrepreneur, sex symbol and now director. His highly anticipated new film "A Single Man" starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore with Nicholas Holt (Skins) and Ginnifer Goodman (He's Just Not That Into You) comes out in Feburary 2010. It is adapted from the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherman and tells the story of a professor (Firth) who's life is turned upside down when his partner is killed in a car crash. Here's the trailer:

The RCA's Little Secrets

RCA Secret 2009 is just around the corner, it's an art exhibition and sale. Hundreds of different artists and designers including Paul Smith, Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry and Yoko Ono have created postcard sized pieces of artwork to be put on sale for for £40 each. These pieces will be exhibited at the RCA from the 13th - 21st November and on the 21st all the cards will go on sale. You need to register to be able to buy one of these exclusive pieces of work. The only catch is you don't find out the identity of the artist until you buy the postcard. So, can you tell the difference between an original Damien Hirst and an unknown artist?

"Fashion is not an artform, if anything at all it's pornography to which millions are totally addicted."

Rage is a film by Sally Potter filmed from a bloggers perspective about the inner workings of the fashion industry. It is set at the scene of a fashion show, the camera does not move throughout the whole film and records interviews with stereotypes from the fashion world. The film is being streamed live to the internet and the characters gradually become aware of this, it's interesting to see how they change when they realise this fact. A tradgedy hits the fashion show and we see how each stereotype reacts to the tradegy. It's a really interesting film with an all star cast including Dame Judy Dench as the critic, Eddy Izzard as the Financer, Jude Law dressed as a woman as the Celebrity Model and Lily Cole as the Model.

It is filmed over the course of 7 days at the show and you can watch the film in episodes on Bablegum.

Inspire Me

I found a really amazing blog called JJJJound which is the simplest most effective blog I've read. He just posts images that inspire him and could inspire others. No dates, no times, no comments, no complications. A few themes that seem to reoccur such as smoking and weed, watches, menswear and naked women. This may all sound a bit too manly but actually so many of the images are really inspiring. Here's a couple from his latest post.

She took over from Daisy Lowe to become the face of luxe sportswear label Hari.

The internet is the new medium for journalism. Online Magazines have blown up recently so I thought I would share a few of my favourites. I still believe you can not beat a tangible paper magazine but obviously it is a lot cheaper and therefore much more feasible to create an online version. I think it is a positive thing that the internet makes everything much more accessible.

Wearable magazine - T-post

I love this idea....you can now get a monthly subscription to a wearable magazine! Once you subscribe to T-Post you receive a t-shirt through the post each month with a new image on the front and article to go with it on the inside. It's a wicked idea, and such an original tshirt concept...you won't see many other people walking around with the same t-shirt on as you....well for now, but when this idea catches on I reckon it will be a very popular one! They collaborate with a new designer, artist or photogapher each month to get a completely unique design for the front. I want one...they're not too expensive at 19 euro's for a tshirt but you have no idea what it will look like until it pops through your letter box....it's a risk I think we should take!

EDUN and Dazed collaborate

Organic cotton brand EDUN have just collaborated with Dazed and Confused Magazine to produce four limited edition t-shirts to be sold in a pop up store in Selfridges. The graphics were designed by illustrator Jo Ratcliffe and 15% of the money from sales will go to the War Child charity. It launched yesterday so get your butts down to Selfridges, I know I will be. Absolutely love this tiger print tee.

I actually worked on the Edun brand when I worked at Exposure PR and really a lot of their garments were pretty boring and some just plain ugly... we couldn't even GIVE them away, but I'm really impressed with this collaboration. It's really fresh and on trend. Exposure must be doing a good job!

Twitter Vs Facebook

In the world of social networking we have to assume that Facebook and Twitter are the front runners, with My Space creeping up behind in third place and Bebo (Bebo who?) bringing up the rear.

So really what are the benefits of Facebook and Twitter. Having just succumbed to a life of tweeting I feel I can kind of comment on this, only Twitter is still a little baffling to me and I must say I am not entirely convinced. As we all know Twitter is basically just status updates and instead of friends we have followers (my follower count so far is 6!Wahey!) but really as far as I can see that's it.... You can send and receive direct messages or mention someone in your tweet or be mentioned in someone else's tweet, but I can never tell when this actually happens, you don't get notifications or anything so you just have to keep checking to see if anyone has mentioned you (which rarely happens in my case!). I personally think Facebook is on a-whole-nother level to Twitter, as you can now mention people in your status updates in the same way as Twitter by putting @ before their name. Twitter feels extremely limited and more a place to follow celebrities, magazines and brands. Which is a massive advantage of it, I love the fact I can find out what my new heart throb Joseph Gordon-Levitt is doing and thinking, aswell as my previous love interest Ashton Kutcher! I do find myself showing off a bit more and writing things I wouldn't have written on Facebook, mainly because I don't have many friends to judge me, but I also feel I can be a bit more pretentious and try and enlighten my 'followers'! And it does feel like a mini blog which is an interesting concept.

Also what is it with everyone using their full names on Facebook? I have actually jumped on the band wagon, the sad little thing that I am. But everyone seems to be embracing their middle names. It's quite an interesting trend...I wonder what it all means! Any ideas?

(500) Days of Summer

Went to see (500) Days of Summer yesterday, mainly because it looked like a good film but also because it coincides with my Uni project about diarys and blogs. I like the way the title has two meanings which you do not realise until you watch the film. It is basically about a guy, Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who falls in love with this girl Summer (Zooey Deschanel), but she doesn't believe in love and doesn't want to put a label on their relationship....she ends up breaking up with him and he is absolutely heart-broken. I won't give away the ending but as I'm sure you have heard "this is not a love story, this is a story about love". It skips back and forward through time between day 1 and day 500 showing us the unravelling of their relationship and then the good bits, and then back to the bad bits but not in a confusing way. I really loved this film and actually felt I could really relate to it....probably more to the girl then the guy!

After watching it I also developed a massive crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt the leading man, who has been in other films such as 10 Things I Hate About You and the cult TV programme 3rd Rock from the Sun. He has also done many independent films which I think makes him more of a credible actor. Got completely obsessed and came back and googled him extensively! But in this process actually found some really interesting images and shoots that he has done such as a very raunchy shoot for GQ with Claudia Schiffer.

IRVING PENN (June 16 1917 – October 7 2009)

I can't believe such an influential photographer has died, but at the age of 92 he has definitely lived a fulfilled life. I absolutely love his work, especially the amazing contrast he created in his black and white photography and the use of his signature cloth backdrop. He liked the edges of the cloth to be seen in the photograph so as not to cause any disillusion. I like the grainy, rough and ready feel of his photographs.

He was well known for his fashion photography and was often featured in influential magazines such as Vogue.

I think we should just celebrate his work so enough of my chatter....

POP LIFE - Tate Modern

I visited the Pop Life exhibition at the Tate Modern yesterday. Was a really good exhibition showing a range of pop artists from Andy Warhol to Takashi Murakami.

I must say it opened my eyes to how many artists just do it for the money or the fame. Andy Warhol especially, he has even been quoted as saying he was desperate to be famous. He is seen as an artist who completely sold out and it wasn't about the art anymore, it was about the money and the fame. He started doing portraits for the rich and famous and was soon hanging out with the glitterati and getting himself papped for the gossip pages of newspapers. At this time that was very unusual for an artist. He was basically just a celebrity whore! He also put his face to many adverts and brands which just highlights his money grabbing ways. This exhibition has kind of lowered my opinion of Warhol, but it was very interesting to see his journey.

There was a brilliant display of Keith Haring's work with his signature figures plastered all over the walls and a 'Pop Shop' to buy badges and transfers.

Jeff Koons was a highlight, with some very explicit larger than life models of him and his porn star wife having sex and other very dirty expoits, I won't post pictures of that because I think its a little early for anal! Damien Hirst had basically re created old ideas using more expensive materials in order to sell them for a higher price. Such as his pill cabinet which was now constructed of gold and instead of pills, glass crystals were in their place.

Takashi Murakami had created an interesting music video of "I think I'm turning Japanese" using Kirsten Dunst and the main viewpoint of the film. I very catchy song and exciting visuals, Kirsten Dunst in a blue wig and very short skirt, what more could you ask for ey!?

The exhibition is running till the 17th January 2010 so go and have a look...its worth the trip.

Jiggery Pokery

A couple of days ago we had the girls from set design and illustrating duo Jiggery Pokery, Anna Lomax and Lauren Davies, to talk to us at Uni. It was really interesting hearing about their work and life. They both graduated from Brighton Uni a couple of years ago with degrees in Illustration. They didn't get on too well with their tutors and sounds like they were criticized quite a lot, but it's nice to know that tutors are not always right as they are doing really well for themselves now and getting to the point where they are having to turn down work. The main bulk of their projects are to do with art direction, set design and prop making. They have a very kitsch eclectic style and love bright bold colours and vintage finds. They spend any spare time scouring one pound shops, vintage markets and charity shops for anything that might be of visual interest.

They jointly worked for Androgony Magazine, Plastique Magazine and seperately for client such as Topshop. They also do many personal p

rojects just for fun and to build up their portfolios.

I really love the way they work, they have worked really hard to get where they are working for free and going the extra mile to make good impressions.

They have an exhibition coming up this weekend starting Sat 10th October in Brighton at the Artist Residence Hotel Gallery. Think it would be a good one to get to but if you can't make that they are bringing it to London at some point to. Will keep you updated.

ASOS and VOGUE?

I was quite shocked to see there is an ASOS own dress on the front cover of Vogue (Nov issue, out tomorrow). I can't make my mind up to whether this is a good thing or not. On one hand it's good that Vogue are becoming a little more accessible but in the same way do they want to become more accessible? Part of the fun of reading Vogue is getting lost in the world of haut couture and it was always something you aspire to, but now with a £55 dress on the cover all that seems to have gone. It's a bold statement.

True Blood

Welcome to the bloody world of the Vampire....

The new series "True Blood" just started tonight on Channel 4. I must admit I think I've caught the vampire bug. I loved it, although this was the first Vampire story that has really intrigued me...."Twilight" is also a massive deal at the moment but I must say I don't see the attraction. I did read the first and second books and am half way through the third but this was mainly because I was stranded on holiday surrounded by French magazines and therefore nothing else to read. I think I was expecting so much more because everyone had hyped it up so much. Everyone seems to get a little obsessed with Edward Cullen, but not me! I spent most of the books waiting for something to actually happen other than Bella and Edward's ridiculously over exaggerated young love; and when something did happen I was like "Oh, is that it?". I did however also see the movie, which was even worse than the books and didn't really do them justice (if they deserved any). What's the big fuss about?

AND now there is a film out "The Vampire's Assistant" which just looks awful. Everyone's jumping on the Vampire band wagon and it's going to get old real quick!

Even the fashion industry's getting in on the action which in some cases is really working but others it is just cringe worthy. Who would actually wear a t shirt with the slogan "Kiss of the Vampire"......

So I'm studying Fashion Promotion and Imaging at the University for the Creative Arts, Epsom and we've been set a research project. I'm basing mine around the technological world of blogging, tweeting and how bloggers are becoming fashion icons. Therefore I thought it paramount to set up my own blog. Should have been done years ago but I'm always a bit slow on these things!
